Sanford Lee

Sanford Lee, founder and owner of Traditional Eastern Medicine, Inc., is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, licensed by the State of Rhode Island Department of Health and certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

He received his initial training in traditional acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet therapy, and Tuina (Chinese massage therapy) at the New England School of Acupuncture in Watertown, Massachusetts. He went on to study extensively in Japan.

"For a number of years I studied a martial art form called the Way of the Dragon, with Master Wu Wenching. During that time I won numerous gold medals in International Chinese Martial Arts Championship tournaments. In the East, there is a deep connection between martial artists and healers. My interest in martial arts and Qigong, then, led me to study acupuncture and traditional eastern medicine.

"After graduating from the New England School of Acupuncture, I travelled to Japan to study with various masters. I gained certification at the Toyo Hari Association. Its founder, a blind acupuncturist, had developed highly sensitive and effective techniques using palpation to acquire subtle energetic information.

"I continued my training with Kobayashi Sensei, the founder of the Shakuju Association. Through this training, I gained a deeper understanding of Qi (pronounced "chee") and its profound effect on the body/mind. My experiences with the Toyo Hari and the Shakuju reinforced my initial experience with Qigong some 20 years ago when I became a certified medical Qigong instructor.

"I am committed to constantly developing my skills. In 2007, I shifted my medical practice away from strictly following the Shakuju protocol, towards an amalgam of techniques that I had learned from my various training. I believe this allows me to provide the greatest benefit to my patients.

"In addition to acupuncture and traditional eastern medicine, I study the "Yi Jing" (I Ching, or "The Book of Changes"). The Yi Jing is an ancient Chinese classic, compiled some 3,000 years ago. Over the years, many great minds have written commentaries on it, including Confucius. It is this text that gave rise to both Confucianism and Daoism, two of the religious/spiritual legs that, along with Buddhism, hold up Chinese culture.

"When I read this classic today, I am struck by its unfailing ability to convey information that resonates with my core and invariably aids in my dealing with current situations. Yi Jing has informed me in my studies in acupuncture and traditional eastern medicine. After some 15 years of engaging in its study, I am still gaining new insights.

"I am also a professional artist. You can see some of my work here."
